The Story Behind Raine Square

Lockie and I walked past ‘Raine Square’ yesterday. Have you ever thought about how it got its name?

The section of the city bordered by Murray, William, Wellington and Queen Streets was named Raine Square in 1986, to honour the amazing business woman, Mary Raine.

She was born in 1877 in London and after migrating to Australia, she ended up in Perth, pretty well by accident in 1904. This was fortunate for WA as well as Mary.

She was way ahead of her time! She used her remarkable business sense to acquire numerous properties in Perth, including the Royal and the Wentworth Hotels in the city and the Windsor Hotel in South Perth.

What a woman!
