It’s hard to imagine a time when Murray Street in the city wasn’t a Mall.

In the 1970s, with considerable opposition from retailers, Hay Street and then Murray Street became closed to traffic between William and Barrack Streets.

It proved to be popular, and all these years later here’s Lockie, resting in the mottled shade of the London Plane trees in the Murray Street Mall. Not a car in sight.
