City of Light, Meet the Spaceman

17 May 2025

You never know what you’re going to find when you take a walk in the city. Yesterday Lockie and I captured the moment when the ‘Boonji Spaceman’ first stepped foot on Perth soil. The image on the right, is a mock up of how it will look. (taken from the internet)The artwork by Brendan Murphy is one of only 6 ‘Boonji Spacemen’ in the world. Each one is created to uniquely express the city that it was made for. The spaceman will be officially unveiled next Friday. It may seem random to have a 7m astronaut land in the middle of our city, but not as random as you might think. In 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth. The people of Perth were asked to put their lights on when Glenn was due to fly past and amazingly, our city was visible from space! Perth was named ‘The City of Light’. All these years later, we have a nod to that brave astronaut, right here in Stirling Gardens.
